Los estabilizadores del estado de ánimo se utilizan para tratar el trastorno afectivo bipolar. El litio fue el primer medicamento utilizado para tratar este trastorno y a veces se le conoce como un medicamento antimanía porque puede ayudar a controlar la manía que ocurre en el trastorno bipolar. El litio debe ser monitoreado de cerca con un rango terapéutico estrecho.

Se cree que la enfermedad de Parkinson está relacionada con un desequilibrio de dopamina y acetilcolina y una deficiencia de dopamina en ciertas áreas del cerebro, por lo que las terapias farmacológicas están dirigidas a aumentar los niveles de dopamina y/o antagonizar los efectos de la acetilcolina. La farmacoterapia no cura la enfermedad, sino que se utiliza para ralentizar la progresión de los síntomas. Los medicamentos comunes que se usan para tratar la enfermedad de Parkinson son carbidopa/levodopa, selegilina y amantadina.
