cohortes urbanas. Las cohortes urbanas fueron hombres de la Guardia Pretoriana (ejército de Augusto), encargados de garantizar la paz en la ciudad. A medida que el crimen se elevaba y se volvía más violento, Augusto formó las vigilias, que no estaban afiliadas a la Guardia Pretoriana, sino que fueron acusadas de combatir la delincuencia y los incendios. A las vigilias se les dio la facultad de proteger y detener. [4]

Debido a que los jóvenes voluntarios hicieron el trabajo policial, hubo varios problemas, como la corrupción y la embriaguez. Víctimas que contaban con los medios para contratar policías privados o guardaespaldas para ello para su protección, pero desgraciadamente, eso significaba que los que eran pobres, no tenían ni ayuda ni protección.
