La fotosíntesis es el proceso químico en el que las plantas transforman la luz solar en energía química. El proceso ha evolucionado durante millones de años y gracias a él, los humanos son capaces de sobrevivir comiendo la generalidad producida por las plantas y respirando el oxígeno liberado como subproducto. ¿Cómo sucede eso? Para fotosintetizar las plantas se necesita la energía del sol, el agua del suelo y el dióxido de carbono de la atmósfera. La reacción química da lugar entonces a glucosa (azúcares/carbohidratos), agua y oxígeno (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)). Los azúcares producidos son utilizados por la planta para su crecimiento y desarrollo, o bien se almacenan en la planta. Se sabe que las plantas de camote almacenan carbohidratos en sus raíces mientras que las plantas de aloe los almacenan en sus hojas.

Hay dos fases principales de la fotosíntesis. Una reacción dependiente de la luz y el Ciclo Calvino (reacción independiente de la luz). Durante las reacciones dependientes de la luz, se necesita luz solar y agua. Las moléculas de agua se dividen liberando oxígeno. La energía que genera se utiliza para fijar el dióxido de carbono en glucosa (azúcar) durante la segunda fase de la fotosíntesis o el Ciclo Calvino (Figura\(\PageIndex{2}\)).
