Estos componentes están dispuestos en verticilos y se adhieren a una zona llamada receptáculo, que se encuentra al final del tallo que conduce a la flor. Este tallo se llama pedúnculo. En el caso de una inflorescencia, donde se producen múltiples floretes en lugar de una sola flor, los tallos que conducen a los floretes se denominan pedicelos.
Verticilos
Las flores están compuestas por conjuntos de hojas altamente modificadas dispuestas en verticilos. El verticilo más externo de una flor se llama cáliz y está compuesto por sépalos. Dentro del cáliz se encuentra la corola, que se compone de pétalos. Los sépalos suelen ser más pequeños y menos coloridos que los pétalos, pero esta regla general puede ser engañosa. Por ejemplo, los lirios suelen tener sépalos y pétalos idénticos. La única manera de distinguir entre ellos es por ubicación: ¿Qué verticilo está en el exterior?
Juntos, el cáliz y la corola se llaman perianto (peri- significado alrededor, anth- que significa flor).
El Perianto: Cáliz y Corolla
Partes Reproductivas: Androecium y Gynoecium
Dentro del perianto se encuentra el androecio (casa del hombre), un verticilo compuesto por estambres. Cada estambre tiene un filamento largo que sostiene sacos de polen llamados anteras. Dentro del androecio se encuentra el ginecio (casa de la mujer), que se compone de carpelos. Cada carpiano tiene un ovario en la base donde se alojan los óvulos. El estilo emerge del ovario y está rematado por el estigma. Los granos de polen aterrizan sobre el estigma y deben crecer un tubo al estilo para llegar al óvulo y completar la fertilización.
