    El sistema radicular de una planta cumple dos funciones principales: absorción de agua y anclaje. Las raíces con mayor superficie se adaptarán mejor a la absorción de agua porque tienen más área para interactuar con el ambiente del suelo. El aumento de la interacción con el ambiente del suelo también puede contribuir a un mayor anclaje, pero siempre hay compensaciones. Si las raíces se vuelven demasiado finas, se romperán fácilmente y perderán la función de anclaje. Adicionalmente, las raíces más finas también pueden perder más agua si el ambiente del suelo se vuelve seco. Alternativamente, las raíces con más volumen son capaces de almacenar más agua, almidones u otros materiales debajo del suelo. El equilibrio de estas compensaciones con entornos localizados ha dado como resultado una gran diversidad de tipos de raíces y morfologías.
