La ciencia ambiental es el estudio dinámico e interdisciplinario de la interacción de las partes vivas y no vivas del medio ambiente, con especial énfasis en el impacto de los humanos en el medio ambiente. El estudio de la ciencia ambiental incluye circunstancias, objetos o condiciones por las que un organismo o comunidad está rodeado y las formas complejas en que interactúan.
¿Por qué estudiar Ciencias Ambientales?
La necesidad de un uso equitativo, ético y sustentable de los recursos de la Tierra por parte de una población global que se acerque a la capacidad de carga del planeta nos obliga no sólo a comprender cómo los comportamientos humanos afectan al medio ambiente, sino también los principios científicos que rigen las interacciones entre los vivos y los no- vivo. Nuestro futuro depende de nuestra capacidad para comprender y evaluar argumentos basados en evidencia sobre las consecuencias ambientales de las acciones y tecnologías humanas, y tomar decisiones informadas basadas en esos argumentos.
Desde el cambio climático global hasta la pérdida de hábitat impulsada por el crecimiento y el desarrollo de la población humana, la Tierra se está convirtiendo en un planeta diferente, justo ante nuestros ojos. La escala global y la tasa de cambio ambiental van más allá de cualquier cosa en la historia humana registrada. Nuestro desafío es adquirir una mejor comprensión de los complejos sistemas ambientales de la Tierra; sistemas caracterizados por interacciones dentro y entre sus componentes naturales y humanos que vinculan fenómenos locales con globales y de corto plazo a largo plazo, y el comportamiento individual con la acción colectiva. La complejidad de los desafíos ambientales exige que todos participemos en la búsqueda e implementación de soluciones que conduzcan a la sostenibilidad ambiental a largo plazo.
