Los factores de virulencia que dañan al huésped incluyen: (1) la capacidad de los PAMP para desencadenar la producción de citocinas inflamatorias que dan como resultado una respuesta inflamatoria excesiva; (2) la capacidad de producir exotoxinas dañinas; (3) y la capacidad de inducir respuestas autoinmunes. La mayoría de los factores de virulencia que discutiremos en esta sección que permiten que las bacterias dañen el cuerpo son productos de genes sensores de quórum.
