La característica definitoria que diferencia a las células eucariotas de las células procariotas es que tienen orgánulos unidos a la membrana, especialmente el núcleo, que contiene el material genético, y está encerrado por la envoltura nuclear. Las células eucariotas también contienen otros orgánulos unidos a la membrana como las mitocondrias y el aparato de Golgi. Además, las plantas y algas contienen cloroplastos. Los organismos eucariotas pueden ser unicelulares o multicelulares. Solo los eucariotas tienen muchos tipos de tejido compuesto por diferentes tipos de células.
