Las actividades microbianas se ven afectadas por las condiciones físico-químicas del ambiente. El entendimiento de la influencia medioambiental sobre los microorganismos permite explicar su distribución ecológica y a diseñar métodos para su control y/o destrucción. No todos los organismos responden igualmente a un factor ambiental determinado. De hecho, una condición ambiental puede ser dañina para un organismo y beneficiosa para otro.
Los factores físicos que influyen sobre el crecimiento de los microorganismos son: temperatura, pH, oxígeno, disponibilidad de agua, presión osmótica y radiaciones.
