- La palabra ciencia viene del latín para “conocimiento”, pero en el inglés moderno significa un tipo de conocimiento muy específico, e implica un método de obtención de conocimiento. La antropología se basa principalmente en la ciencia. La antropología es holística. Los cuatro principales subcampos de la antropología son la antropología cultural, la antropología física (biológica), la arqueología y la lingüística. Antes de hablar de ciencia, debemos retroceder aún más, y hablar de epistemología, el estudio de cómo sabemos las cosas.
- 1.2: La antropología como ciencia
- La antropología difiere de otras ciencias porque enfatiza el holismo y la genealogía. El énfasis en la genealogía para la antropología cultural implica un enfoque en la familia (estructura doméstica). El énfasis en la genealogía para la antropología física extiende la metáfora del árbol genealógico de un individuo y su familia, a un árbol genealógico de escritura grande que utiliza taxonomía filogénica para contextualizar la especie humana.
