    Este libro ofrece una introducción al estudio del significado en el lenguaje humano, desde una perspectiva lingüística. Abarca una gama bastante amplia de temas, incluyendo la semántica léxica, la semántica compositiva y la pragmática. Como indica el título, este libro es verdaderamente una INTRODUCCIÓN: proporciona una base sólida que preparará a los estudiantes para tomar cursos más avanzados y especializados en semántica y/o pragmática. También se pretende ser una referencia para los trabajadores de campo que realizan investigaciones primarias sobre lenguajes subdocumentados, para ayudarlos a escribir descripciones gramaticales que traten cuidadosa y claramente temas semánticos. El enfoque adoptado aquí es en gran parte descriptivo y no formal (o, en algunos lugares, semiformal), aunque se introduce alguna notación lógica básica. El libro está escrito a nivel que debe ser apropiado para estudiantes de pregrado avanzado o de posgrado principiante. Presupone algunos cursos previos en lingüística, pero no presupone ningún trasfondo en lógica formal o teoría de conjuntos.

    Los capítulos están organizados en seis unidades:

    1. Conceptos fundacionales
    2. Significados de las palabras
    3. Implicatura (incluidos los actos indirectos del habla)
    4. Semántica composicional
    5. Modales, condicionales y causalidad
    6. Tenso y aspecto.

    La mayoría de los capítulos incluyen ejercicios que pueden ser utilizados para la discusión en clase y/o tareas escolares, y cada capítulo contiene referencias para lecturas adicionales sobre los temas tratados.
