- En algunas circunstancias, el gobierno considera que el precio de equilibrio del libre mercado es demasiado alto. Si hay presión política para actuar, un gobierno puede imponer un precio máximo, o techo de precios, a un mercado.
- 2.5: Impuestos
- A menudo se imponen impuestos para proporcionar ingresos gubernamentales. El gobierno también utiliza impuestos para disminuir el consumo de un bien como el alcohol o el tabaco. Estos impuestos se llaman “impuestos al pecado”, sobre bienes que no son favorecidos por la sociedad. Estos bienes suelen tener demandas inelásticas, lo que permite al gobierno aplicar un impuesto y obtener ingresos. Los impuestos también pueden ser utilizados para cumplir objetivos ambientales, u otras metas sociales: bienes como la gasolina y las emisiones de carbón son gravados.
- 2.7: Inmigración
- La agricultura intensiva en mano de obra, como la producción de frutas y hortalizas en naciones de altos ingresos, emplea trabajadores inmigrantes y paga salarios bajos. Estos trabajadores ofrecen una enorme contribución a la economía agrícola a través del arduo trabajo en la producción de alimentos y fibra. Sin embargo, es posible que la inmigración pueda tener un impacto negativo en los pueblos rurales, ya que la prestación de servicios públicos como instalaciones médicas, escuelas y vivienda para trabajadores de bajos salarios suele ser costosa.
