Podemos combinar oscilaciones de tiempo y fase espacial para hacer una onda viajera. Por ejemplo

Definimos la intensidad de la ola como
\[ |\psi|^{2} = \psi^{*} \psi \nonumber \]
Dónde\(\psi^{*}\) está el complejo conjugado de\(\psi\). Dado que la intensidad de esta ola es uniforme en todas partes\(|\psi|^{2} =1\) se le conoce como onda plana.
Una onda plana tiene al menos cuatro dimensiones (amplitud real, amplitud imaginaria, x y t) por lo que no es tan fácil de trazar. En cambio, en la Figura 1.4.1 trazamos planos de una fase dada. Estos planos se mueven por el espacio a la velocidad de fase\(v_{p}\),, de la onda. Por ejemplo, considere el plano correspondiente a\(\phi=0\).
