    Cuando una corriente eléctrica fluye a través de la materia, a menudo ocurren cambios químicos permanentes. En algunos casos, la energía eléctrica suministrada desde una fuente externa puede provocar una reacción química. Tal proceso se llama electrólisis, y el sistema al que se suministra la electricidad se llama celda electrolítica. También es posible producir un flujo de electricidad como resultado de una reacción química espontánea. Un sistema químico que puede hacer que una corriente fluya de esta manera se denomina celda galvánica o celda voltaica. Dado que una corriente eléctrica es un flujo de electrones u otras partículas cargadas, no debería sorprender que tanto las celdas electrolíticas como las galvánicas involucren reacciones redox.
