    Los elementos del grupo principal (s - y p -block) se encuentran entre los más diversos en la Tabla Periódica. Desde gases no metálicos (por ejemplo, hidrógeno y flúor), pasando por semimetales (por ejemplo, metaloides como el silicio) hasta metales altamente reactivos (por ejemplo, sodio y potasio). El estudio de los elementos principales del grupo es importante por varias razones. A nivel académico ejemplifican las tendencias y predicciones en estructura y reactividad que son la clave de la Tabla Periódica. Representan la diversidad de la química inorgánica y los aspectos fundamentales de la estructura y la unión que también están presentes para los elementos de metal de transición, lantánido y actínido.
