Aislacionistas tanto de izquierda como de derecha básicamente dicen que deberíamos quedarnos en casa y no involucrarnos en conflictos en el extranjero a menos que seamos atacados. A la derecha están Rand Paul y Pat Buchannan y a la izquierda están Bernie Sanders y Tulsi Gabbard. Donald Trump también ha mostrado tendencias aislacionistas. Se retiró del pacto comercial del TPP, los Acuerdos de París sobre calentamiento global, el tratado de misiles INF, el tratado de congelación nuclear de Irán, la UNESCO y la Corte Penal Internacional. También insistió en una renegociación del pacto comercial del TLCAN con Canadá y México y ha cuestionado la alianza de la OTAN.
