- La adolescencia es un periodo que comienza con la pubertad y termina con la transición a la edad adulta. La adolescencia ha evolucionado históricamente, con evidencia que indica que esta etapa se alarga a medida que los individuos inician la pubertad antes y pasan a la edad adulta más tarde que en el pasado. La finalización de la educación formal, la independencia financiera de los padres, el matrimonio y la paternidad han sido todos marcadores del fin de la adolescencia y el inicio de la edad adulta, lo que ocurre, en promedio, más tarde ahora que en el pasado.
- 7.2: Desarrollo físico
- Si bien la secuencia de cambios físicos en la pubertad es predecible, el inicio y el ritmo de la pubertad varían ampliamente. Durante este tiempo, las características sexuales primarias y secundarias se desarrollan y maduran. Durante la pubertad, ambos sexos experimentan un rápido aumento de la estatura (es decir, crecimiento acelerado). Los adolescentes participan en mayores comportamientos de riesgo y arrebatos emocionales posiblemente porque los lóbulos frontales de sus cerebros aún se están desarrollando.
- 7.3: Desarrollo cognitivo
- Durante la adolescencia, los adolescentes van más allá del pensamiento concreto y se vuelven capaces del pensamiento abstracto. El pensamiento adolescente también se caracteriza por la capacidad de considerar múltiples puntos de vista, imaginar situaciones hipotéticas, debatir ideas y opiniones (por ejemplo, política, religión y justicia) y formar nuevas ideas. Además, no es raro que los adolescentes cuestionen la autoridad o cuestionen las normas sociales establecidas.
- 7.4: Desarrollo Social
- A medida que los niños se convierten en adolescentes, suelen comenzar a pasar más tiempo con sus compañeros y menos tiempo con sus familias, y estas interacciones entre pares son cada vez más dessupervisadas por adultos. Las nociones de amistad de los niños a menudo se centran en actividades compartidas, mientras que las nociones de amistad de los adolescentes se centran cada vez más en intercambios íntimos de pensamientos y sentimientos. Uno de los cambios clave durante la adolescencia es la renegociación de las relaciones padre-hijo.
