Cuando la mayoría de la gente piensa en geografía, piensa en memorizar los estados, capitales de los estados, y quizás aprender la ubicación de varios países alrededor del mundo. Estos hechos tratan de la subdisciplina de la geografía política porque muestran cómo se refleja la política en la superficie de la Tierra, pero la geografía política es mucho más que una “búsqueda trivial” de dicha información. Si bien el conocimiento de la ubicación de los países y estados es fundamental y una base importante para el estudio de la geografía política, el tema aborda muchos otros temas como alianzas militares y económicas, fronteras entre países, terrorismo y otros conflictos civil-militares , y la geografía del proceso electoral.
