La mayoría de las estrellas que observamos forman constelaciones fijas en el cielo, experimentando un movimiento diario (por ejemplo, el ascenso y el ajuste) pero manteniendo posiciones fijas entre sí, como las estrellas de Orión o la Osa Grande. Sin embargo, los antiguos notaron que 5 estrellas se movían constantemente —todas siguiendo cerca de los caminos del Sol y la Luna a través de los cielos, es decir, cerca de la eclíptica. Los griegos los llamaban planetas —Griego para vagabundos— nombre que todavía se usaba.
