El movimiento general de un cuerpo rígido de masa m consiste en una traslación del centro de masa con velocidad\(\overrightarrow{\mathbf{V}}_{c m}\) y una rotación alrededor del centro de masa con todos los elementos del cuerpo rígido girando con la misma velocidad angular\(\vec{\omega}_{\mathrm{cm}}\). Demostramos este resultado en el Apéndice A. La Figura 20.1 muestra que el centro de masa de una varilla rígida arrojada sigue una trayectoria parabólica mientras que la varilla gira alrededor del centro de masa.
