Escribimos un polarizador cuyo eje coincide con el eje $x$ como

$M=\left(\begin{array}{ll} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{array}\right) \notag$

se cumple $\mathbf{E}^{\prime}=$ ME. Si el eje de polarización forma un ángulo $\alpha$ con el eje $x$ no hay más que aplicar una matriz de rotación

El uso de las matrices ahorra trabajo especialmente cuando tenemos un gran número de elementos (se obtiene una matriz del sistema que vale para todo estado de polarización inicidente).
