La textura, la estructura, el agrietamiento y la cantidad de materia orgánica influyen en la permeabilidad. Se debe estimar la permeabilidad del horizonte menos permeable, ya que éste se convierte en el horizonte más limitante para el movimiento de agua y aire y la penetración radicular. Las clases de permeabilidad del suelo son lentas, moderadas y rápidas.
Permeabilidad lenta | < 0.6 pulgadas de agua se mueven a través del suelo por hora. La permeabilidad lenta incluye texturas de arcilla limosa, arcillosa y arcillosa arenosa y suelos con subsuelos masivos. |
Permeabilidad moderada | 0.6—6.0 pulgadas de agua se mueven a través del suelo por hora. La permeabilidad moderada incluye texturas de franco limo, franco, franco arcilloso arenoso, franco arcilloso limoso y franco arenoso. |
Permeabilidad rápida | De 6 a 20 pulgadas de agua se mueven a través del suelo por hora. La permeabilidad rápida incluye texturas de arena arcillosa y arena y suelos con más de 15% de grava. |
