Hemos adoptado un modelo del Sistema Terrestre como un conjunto de “esferas” que interactúan, la atmósfera, la hidrosfera, la biosfera y la litosfera. Al ser sistemas abiertos, la energía y la masa se ciclan constantemente entre ellos. El transporte y transformación de sustancias a través del sistema de la Tierra se conocen colectivamente como ciclos biogeoquímicos. Estos incluyen los ciclos hidrológicos (agua), nitrógeno, carbono y oxígeno.
