Otra dimensión en la que difieren las fuentes de energía es la seguridad, tanto para los trabajadores como para la población en general. Los datos sobre seguridad en la industria energética, particularmente fuera de Estados Unidos y Europa, son muy difíciles de conseguir, pero los datos que existen a nivel mundial se presentan en la Figura 7.
Quizás como era de sorprender, el carbón y el petróleo presentan las tasas de mortalidad más altas para todas las fuentes de energía de las que se dispone de datos Por BTU, algunas de las fuentes de energía más seguras han sido históricamente la eólica y la solar (en parte porque representan una parte muy pequeña de la producción global de energía), el gas natural y quizás sorprendentemente la nuclear.
