Periodo Carbonífero (hace 359 a 299 millones de años)
El Período Carbonífero obtuvo su nombre de la abundancia de depósitos de carbón en rocas del Paleozoico Tardío en Europa. En Estados Unidos, el Período Carbonífero se subdivide en el Período Mississippian y Pennsylvanian Period. También existe abundancia de depósitos de carbón de estas edades en el este y centro de Estados Unidos. Durante el Carbonífero el mundo era muy diferente al actual. La atmósfera de la Tierra era mucho más gruesa, teniendo hasta un 40% más de oxígeno y un entorno global más uniforme del que existe hoy en día según algunas estimaciones.
