La función principal de un aeropuerto, además de facilitar la conexión intermodal de pasajeros, es garantizar que las aeronaves puedan aterrizar, despegar y moverse de manera eficiente y segura. Así, se necesitan muchos sistemas y subsistemas para facilitar el logro de este fin, abarcando muchos protocolos y procesos. Estos procesos son la mayoría de las veces apenas visibles para los pasajeros, pero tienen una complejidad extraordinaria, especialmente en los grandes aeropuertos internacionales. Aquí nos centraremos en los deberes de operación aeroportuaria de Gestión del Tráfico Aéreo (ATM) y, fundamentalmente, en las ayudas de navegación aeroportuarias que deben estar disponibles para garantizar operaciones seguras. Por último, señalaremos brevemente algunos temas relacionados con la gestión de la seguridad y las preocupaciones ambientales en las operaciones aeroportuarias.
