Por otra parte, hay una materia llamada matemática combinatoria, y eso es lo que vamos a estar estudiando, así que tendremos que contarte algunos datos básicos. Lo que vamos a intentar hacer es darte la oportunidad de descubrir muchos de los ejemplos interesantes que suelen aparecer como ejemplos de libros de texto y descubrir los principios que aparecen como teoremas de libros de texto. Tu actividad principal será resolver problemas diseñados para llevarte a descubrir los principios básicos de las matemáticas combinatorias. Algunos de los problemas te llevan a través de una nueva idea, algunos te dan la oportunidad de describir lo que has aprendido en una secuencia de problemas, y algunos son bastante desafiantes. Cuando encuentres un problema desafiante, no renuncies a él, pero no dejes que te impida continuar con otros problemas. Frecuentemente encontrarás una idea en un problema posterior que podrás llevar de vuelta al que omitiste o solo terminaste parcialmente para rematarla. Con eso en mente, comencemos. En los problemas que siguen, verás algunos problemas marcados a la izquierda con varios símbolos. El prefacio da una explicación completa de estos símbolos y discute con mayor detalle por qué el libro está organizado como es! El cuadro 1.1.1, que se repite desde el prefacio, resume el significado de los símbolos.
