    Una ecuación diferencial es una ecuación para una función que relaciona los valores de la función con los valores de sus derivadas. Una ecuación diferencial ordinaria (ode) es una ecuación diferencial para una función de una sola variable, por ejemplo\(x(t)\), mientras que una ecuación diferencial parcial (pde) es una ecuación diferencial para una función de varias variables, por ejemplo,\(v(x, y, z, t)\). Una oda contiene derivados ordinarios y un pde contiene derivados parciales. Por lo general, los pde's son mucho más difíciles de resolver que los ode.
