Jens Høyrup estudió matemáticas y física, con tesis en física de partículas (1969). En 1973 ingresó a la recién fundada Universidad Roskilde, primero la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales, pasando en 1978 a la de Humanidades. Ha enseñado ampliamente sobre historia de las ideas y de la filosofía y sobre filosofía de la ciencia. Su investigación, aunque a veces se mueve dentro de este campo más amplio, se ha concentrado en la historia conceptual y social de las matemáticas premodernas y tempranas modernas.
