Cuando las personas necesitan almacenar o comunicar mensajes en secreto, recurren a la criptografía. La criptografía implica el uso de técnicas para oscurecer un mensaje para que los forasteros no puedan leer el mensaje. Por lo general, se divide en dos pasos: cifrado, en el que el mensaje está oscurecido, y descifrado, en el que el mensaje original se recupera de la forma oscurecida.
