    La termodinámica es un tema cuantitativo. Nos permite derivar relaciones entre los valores de numerosas cantidades físicas. Algunas cantidades físicas, como una fracción molar, son adimensionales; el valor de una de estas cantidades es un número puro. La mayoría de las cantidades, sin embargo, no son adimensionales y sus valores deben incluir una o más unidades. En este capítulo se revisa el sistema de unidades SI, que son las unidades preferidas en aplicaciones científicas. El capítulo luego discute algunas manipulaciones matemáticas útiles de cantidades físicas usando cálculo de cantidad, y ciertos aspectos generales del análisis dimensional.
