    En la ciencia, una ley es un enunciado o relación matemática que describe de manera concisa observaciones experimentales reproducibles. La termodinámica clásica se construye sobre una base de tres leyes, ninguna de las cuales puede derivarse de principios que son más fundamentales. En este capítulo se discuten aspectos teóricos de la primera ley; se dan ejemplos de procesos reversibles e irreversibles y del calor y trabajo que se producen en ellos; y se introduce la función de estado extensiva capacidad calorífica.
