Las reacciones químicas que hemos considerado en capítulos anteriores implican cambios en la estructura electrónica de las especies involucradas, es decir, la disposición de los electrones alrededor de átomos, iones o moléculas. La estructura nuclear, el número de protones y neutrones dentro de los núcleos de los átomos involucrados, permanece sin cambios durante las reacciones químicas. En este capítulo se introducirá el tema de la química nuclear, que comenzó con el descubrimiento de la radiactividad en 1896 por el físico francés Antoine Becquerel y que se ha vuelto cada vez más importante durante los siglos XX y XXI, proporcionando las bases para diversas tecnologías relacionadas con la energía, la medicina, geología, y muchas otras áreas.
