Hasta este punto solo hemos considerado enlaces entre átomos de un mismo elemento. Si bien esto simplifica las cosas (aunque quizás no estés de acuerdo después de pensar en las muchas formas de carbono), deja fuera la gran mayoría de los compuestos que existen en el mundo y sus químicas. Además, los elementos puros son raros en la naturaleza. Gran parte de los esfuerzos de los alquimistas, los primeros químicos y la industria moderna de refinación implican determinar cómo separar (económicamente) tipos específicos de átomos (elementos) de otros. La química moderna se ocupa (en gran parte) de unir átomos para formar moléculas nuevas y útiles. Ambos implican comprender los conceptos que subyacen a cómo interactúan los átomos.
