    Nuestro retozo a través de los ligandos dativos comunes continúa con los carbenos N-heterocíclicos (NHCs). Aunque abordaremos los carbenos en general en otra publicación, los NHC merecen su propio asentimiento debido a su estructura única, propiedades y sintonizabilidad estérica. A diferencia de la mayoría de los carbenos metálicos, los NHC son típicamente no reactivos cuando se coordinan con un metal (con algunas excepciones). Al igual que las fosfinas, se utilizan comúnmente para modular las propiedades estéricas y electrónicas de los complejos metálicos. De hecho, las similitudes entre los NHCs y las fosfinas son notables. En general, pocos ligandos son tan efectivos como los NHC para aumentar la densidad de electrones en un centro metálico mientras permanecen inocentes.
