La cromatografía es una técnica utilizada para separar los componentes de una mezcla. Se puede utilizar como técnica analítica para obtener información sobre lo que está presente en una mezcla, o como técnica de purificación para separar y recolectar los componentes de una mezcla.

2.1: Preludio a la Cromatografía

2.2: Generalidades de Cromatografía
La cromatografía en el laboratorio de química orgánica se puede clasificar en varias categorías amplias: Cromatografía de capa fina, Cromatografía en columna y cromatografía de gases. Estas técnicas siguen los mismos principios generales en cuanto a cómo son capaces de separar mezclas, por lo que se discutirán colectivamente en esta sección. Los detalles específicos de cada técnica se discutirán posteriormente en sus propias secciones.

2.3: Cromatografía en Capa Fina (TLC)
Muchos estudiantes ingresan a la química orgánica habiendo hecho ya una forma de cromatografía en su carrera académica, ya sea en primaria o en química general. Lo más probable es que esta haya sido cromatografía en papel (Figura 2.4), ya que los materiales son baratos pero siguen siendo efectivos. La cromatografía en papel se puede utilizar para separar los tintes en bolígrafos, marcadores y colorantes alimentarios. La cromatografía en capa fina (TLC) es una extensión de la cromatografía en papel y utiliza una fase estacionaria diferente.
2.4: Cromatografía en Columna
La cromatografía en columna es una extensión de la cromatografía en capa fina (TLC). En lugar de aplicar una muestra sobre una fina capa de sílice o alúmina, se deposita una muestra sobre un cilindro de adsorbente y el disolvente se aplica continuamente con presión hasta que los componentes drenan completamente del cilindro. Con esta modificación, los componentes no solo pueden separarse sino recogerse en diferentes recipientes, permitiendo la purificación de mezclas.

2.5: Cromatografía de gases (GC)
La cromatografía de gases (GC) es una poderosa técnica instrumental utilizada para separar y analizar mezclas. Un cromatógrafo de gases es un equipo estándar en laboratorios forenses, médicos y de pruebas ambientales.
