No hay una sola palabra mejor para describir la función del corazón que no sea “bombear”, ya que su contracción desarrolla la presión que expulsa sangre a los vasos principales: la aorta y el tronco pulmonar. De estos vasos, la sangre se distribuye al resto del cuerpo. Si bien la connotación del término “bomba” sugiere un dispositivo mecánico hecho de acero y plástico, la estructura anatómica es un músculo vivo y sofisticado. Al leer este capítulo, trata de tener en cuenta estos conceptos gemelos: bomba y músculo.
Aunque el término “corazón” es una palabra inglesa, la terminología cardíaca (relacionada con el corazón) se remonta al término latino, “kardia”. La cardiología es el estudio del corazón, y los cardiólogos son los médicos que se ocupan principalmente del corazón.
