El agua es esencial para que los seres vivos sobrevivan porque todas las reacciones químicas dentro de un cuerpo tienen lugar en una solución de agua. El cuerpo de un animal consiste en hasta un 80% de agua. La proporción exacta depende del tipo de animal, su edad, sexo, salud y si ha tenido o no suficiente para beber. Generalmente los animales no sobreviven a una pérdida de más del 15% de su agua corporal.
En los vertebrados casi 2/3 de esta agua se encuentra en las células (líquido intracelular). El resto se encuentra fuera de las células (líquido extracelular) donde se encuentra en los espacios alrededor de las células (líquido tisular), así como en la sangre y la linfa.
