La excreción de urea del cuerpo y el mantenimiento del equilibrio hídrico, como se describió anteriormente, son las principales funciones del riñón. Sin embargo, los riñones tienen otras funciones en mantener estables las condiciones en el cuerpo, es decir, en mantener la homeostasis. Estos incluyen:

- controlling the concentration of salt ions (Na+, K+, Cl-) in the blood by adjusting how much is excreted or retained;
- maintaining the correct acidity of the blood. Excess acid is constantly being produced by the normal chemical reactions in the body and the kidney eliminates this.
