La subcutis es la capa más profunda del tegumento, intercalada entre la dermis y el músculo esquelético. La hipodermis sirve como protección física, así como una reserva de energía y fuente de aislamiento y regulación térmica. Está compuesto principalmente por tejido adiposo, cuya cantidad varía según la especie, el sitio anatómico y el estado nutricional. El tejido adiposo está compuesto por racimos o láminas de células llenas de lípidos, llamadas adipocitos. En la histología, el lípido en los adipocitos aparece vacío, ya que el lípido liposoluble se lava durante el procesamiento.
