Los conductos colectores abarcan la corteza renal y la médula y concentran la orina. El conducto colector está compuesto por epitelio cuboidal simple. Hay dos tipos distintos de células presentes en los túbulos colectores: células intercaladas y células principales. Las células principales son el tipo celular predominante con microvellosidades cortas dispersas y contienen bomba de Na+/K+ ATPasa y acuaporina, que es un canal de agua regulado por la hormona antidiurética [ADH]. Las células intercaladas son menores en número, pero son importantes para la regulación del pH de la sangre. Estas células ajustarán la reabsorción de bicarbonato o iones hidrógeno.
