A medida que el mesonefros degenera (ya que es un precursor de los genitales tubulares masculinos), los ovarios en desarrollo y los genitales ductulares están envueltos en pliegues de peritoneo. Esta estructura se llama pliegue genital y sus divisiones son nombradas por las porciones adheridas del tracto reproductivo. El mesovarium sostiene y suspende los ovarios en el peritoneo. El mesosalpinx se adhiere a la trompa uterina y porciones del ovario. El mesometrio (ligamento ancho del útero) sostiene el útero en el canal pélvico y abdomen.
