Descripción de la celda:
Los glóbulos rojos aparecen pequeños y densos, careciendo de un área de palidez central con múltiples proyecciones puntiformes (espículas) de diferentes longitudes que sobresalen de la membrana. Las proyecciones se distribuyen irregularmente alrededor de la membrana celular. 1-3
Formación de células:
La formación de acantocitos ocurre como resultado de defectos de membrana hereditarios o adquiridos. Los defectos que causan un desequilibrio entre el colesterol de la membrana y el contenido lipídico afectan la capacidad de los glóbulos rojos para deformarse dando como resultado una membrana plasmática más rígida. Los glóbulos rojos son entonces remodelados en circulación, dando como resultado un acantocito. 1,3,4
