La genética es el estudio de la herencia. Johann Gregor Mendel estableció el marco para la genética mucho antes de que se hubieran identificado cromosomas o genes, en un momento en que la meiosis no se entendía bien. Mendel seleccionó un sistema biológico simple y realizó análisis metódicos y cuantitativos utilizando muestras de gran tamaño. Debido a la obra de Mendel, se revelaron los principios fundamentales de la herencia. Ahora sabemos que los genes, portados en cromosomas, son las unidades funcionales básicas de la herencia con capacidad de replicarse, expresarse o mutarse. Hoy, los postulados planteados por Mendel forman la base de la genética clásica, o mendeliana,. No todos los genes se transmiten de padres a hijos según la genética mendeliana, pero los experimentos de Mendel sirven como un excelente punto de partida para pensar en la herencia.
