Los musgos pueden crecer en el tronco de un árbol, y las colas de caballo pueden mostrar sus tallos articulados y hojas espinosas a través del suelo del bosque. Hoy en día, las plantas sin semillas representan solo una pequeña fracción de las plantas de nuestro entorno; sin embargo, hace trescientos millones de años, las plantas sin semillas dominaban el paisaje y crecieron en los enormes bosques pantanosos del período Carbonífero. Su descomposición creó grandes yacimientos de carbón que hoy minamos.
El pensamiento evolutivo actual sostiene que todas las plantas, las algas verdes y los habitantes de la tierra, son monofiléticas; es decir, son descendientes de un solo ancestro común. La transición evolutiva del agua a la tierra impuso severas restricciones a las plantas. Tuvieron que desarrollar estrategias para evitar la desecación, dispersar las células reproductivas en el aire, para el soporte estructural y para capturar y filtrar la luz solar. Si bien las plantas semilleras desarrollaron adaptaciones que les permitieron poblar incluso los hábitats más áridos de la Tierra, la plena independencia del agua no ocurrió en todas las plantas. La mayoría de las plantas sin semillas aún requieren un ambiente húmedo.
