Bajo el paraguas de los protistas, existen varios grupos heterótrofos. Algunos de estos están estrechamente relacionados con linajes fotosintéticos de protistas que han obtenido cloroplastos a través de eventos endosimbióticos, como Oomycota y Phaeophyta. Sin embargo, debido a la relación entre las estrategias nutricionales y los roles ecológicos, a menudo tiene más sentido discutir estos linajes en grupos de heterótrofos y autótrofos, en lugar de la relación evolutiva.
En este capítulo se introducirán los mohos de limo y los oomicetos, ya que estos son grupos comúnmente discutidos en cursos de botánica. Sin embargo, es importante señalar que existe una gran diversidad de linajes protistas heterótrofos no cubiertos aquí con importantes y fascinantes roles ecológicos.
