Debido a esto, los rasgos de la historia de vida de los protistas abarcan la amplitud de lo que es posible. En este libro, los protistas se han dividido en heterótrofos y fotoautótrofos. Los protistas heterótrofos utilizan glucógeno como carbohidrato de almacenamiento, tienen celulosa en sus paredes celulares (cuando están presentes) y muchos tienen un ciclo de vida diplónico. A pesar de estos dos últimos rasgos, todos fueron clasificados anteriormente como hongos. Los protistas fotoautotróficos son el resultado de eventos endosimbióticos (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)). Un linaje, incluyendo las diatomeas y algas pardas, derivado de un evento endosimbiótico secundario dentro de los heterocontes. Un segundo linaje, incluyendo glaucófitas, algas rojas y algas verdes, se derivó de un evento endosimbiótico primario. Este último linaje incluye a los antepasados de todas las plantas terrestres.
