En las angiospermas, el desarrollo después de que el esperma del tubo de polen fertiliza el óvulo en el óvulo, formando el cigoto diploide. A través de la división y diferenciación celular, el cigoto forma un embrión maduro, que permanece latente dentro de la semilla hasta la germinación (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)). Una plántula emerge y continúa desarrollándose hasta convertirse en planta madura, que finalmente florecerá y sufrirá polinización, completando el ciclo de vida.
La variedad de tejidos y órganos en el cuerpo de la planta es el resultado de diferencias en la expresión génica. Si bien todas las células diploides de una planta tienen la misma información genética, qué genes son activos en cada estructura varía, resultando en un organismo complejo, multicelular.
