A excepción del palo Biltmore, todos trabajan en el mismo principio de tomar dos lecturas de pendiente. Las básculas de cada instrumento están alojadas en un entorno diferente.

- Hipsómetro de palo Biltmore
Aunque no se usa comúnmente, un palo Biltmore es una herramienta económica para obtener una estimación aproximada de la altura del árbol. Se basa en el principio de triángulos similares (Figura 2.14).
