Una vez clasificados como Chytridiomycota, estos hongos acuáticos tempranos ahora se agrupan en Blastocladiomycota, Chytridiomycota y Neocallimastigomycota. Aunque probablemente no están directamente relacionados, estos hongos comparten algunas características:
- Principalmente acuáticos, aunque algunos son parásitos de plantas terrestres
- Esporas de natación (zoosporas) con un solo flagelo de latigazo cervical
